A Towanda man was sent to
the Bradford County Correctional Facility when he could not come up with $55,000
bail. Larry Richard Nichols Jr. was arrested on a bench warrant issued by
District Justice Clarks office for failure to appear in court on other charges.
State Police say more charges are pending involving Nichols.
State Police at Laporte
are investigating a hit and run accident that occured on Emick Farm Road in
Hillsgrove Township, Sullivan County. A 2002 Subaru Forester owned by Ethel
Hiller of Williamsport was parked off the West Side of the road when it was
struck by a white vehicle that did not stay at the scene. Anyone with
information on the incident is asked to call the State Police at
Laporte.
A Binghamton New York man who was assualted in
an incident in September of 2011 is himself facing charges after failing to
answer subpoena's on 2 seperate occasions to appear in District Magistrate
Wheaton's Court. State Police are looking to serve the man and possibly place
him in the Bradford County Correctional Facility.
2 Work release inmates
from the Tioga County Prison are facing charges after being on a detail in
Charleston Township. State Police say the inmates are accused of breaking into a
Shed across from the prison on the Shumway Hill Road. The incident is under
investigation.
Parole commissioners this week will interview Eric M. Smith, who in 1993
murdered a 4-year-old boy, to see if he should be released from prison. Smith,
who was 13 when he killed Derrick Robie in Savnoa, is serving a sentence of nine
years to life at Clinton Correctional Facility near Dannemora. Both boys were from Savona. He became eligible for
parole in 2002, though commissioners have repeatedly denied his requests to live
amongst the public, citing the cruelty of the murder. His most recent parole
board hearing was in April 2010.
Tioga County District Attorney Gerald Keene has announced
he's running for Tioga County Court Judge. The honorable Vincent Sgueglia
will be retiring at the end of this year. Keene, 56, has more than 30
years of trial experience. He
says he's prosecuted hundreds of felony cases and has obtained convictions in
several high profile homicide, arson drug and rape cases. Keene is a 1973
graduate of Waverly High School. He and his wife, Betty, and two kids Kyle
and Alex, live in Waverly.
A
convicted murderer from Elmira eligible for parole for the first time this year
had that first request denied. The state Board of Parole turned down the
request for parole by Demetrius Moore, one of two men convicted in the 1988
murder of 74-year-old Rose Swartwood of Elmira. The panel noted the
seriousness of the crime, Moore's lengthy criminal record prior to the murder,
and a poor disciplinary record in prison. Moore, who is serving his
25-year-to-life sentence in Collins Correctional Facility, will be eligible for
parole consideration again in 201
